2013- Setting Goals and Achieving Them

Happy 2013 everyone! As the new year sets in, many of us think about goals we’d like to make, and how to better ourselves. Most of the time these goals turn out to be way bigger than we can handle and we don’t make it through a season, let alone a year. I’m totally guilty of this.

This year, I’m getting ambitious. My goal is to follow through with my goals! This involves reading books and trying recipes to strengthen my mind and body, maximizing our family time, beautifying our home and blogging about it in the process! HOW am I going to do all of this without setting myself up for failure?

A couple years back I was going through some tough stuff and seeing a counselor. Among dealing with the issues I was initially there for, I realized that I had a lot of trouble accomplishing goals I set for myself.My primary problem was that I would take an interest in something, start a big project ( like a blog!), get overwhelmed  and move on to the Next Big Thing.

This was a vicious cycle, because I would become so invested in a project that I would feel like a total failure when I got to the point where I didn’t see it through. I realized this was spilling into my everyday tasks as well and that’s when using a day runner became so important for me to tackle the small stuff. But what about the bigger projects?

Goal Ladders are exactly what they sound like. At the top is your major goal and each rung is a smaller task that helps you accomplish that goal. I’ll use getting fit as an example, since it’s such a popular New Years Resolution.

Recently UpdatedHere, I’ve taken a relaxed approach over a regimented one. These aren’t hard and fast rules, but a visual aide for me to stay mindful of my choices of how I shop, exercise and eat. Someone who, say, wants to participate in the next Tough Mudder, would have more rules than reminders, how much they run per week, how much protein they’re taking in, etc.

I’ve also invested in an undated daily planner that has a full page devoted to each day. This makes it easier for me to remember ALL my tasks for the day, from blog posts to doctor’s appointments.

    There is also a little technique you can use, if you have the courage that will almost guarantee the achievement of big goals and dreams. It is based on the idea of “social pressure”.

    Think about this; let’s say you have a goal to lose a certain amount of weight or achieve some desired level of fitness. You can set the goal privately and tell yourself, “I am going to achieve this goal by August 1.” On the other hand, you can make the goal public by telling all of your friends and family what you intend to do and even give a date for your desired completion.

    As soon as you take that goal public, you move into a different state of mind. No longer are you at the mercy of your own self-discipline (which has been tarnished by years of bad habits). Now you have a much more powerful force dictating your day to day actions and decisions.
